A Toast to Freedom: African American Wine and Food Pairings for Juneteenth

Wine and Food Pairings for Juneteenth

Today we take time to commemorate, learn, and reflect on a crucial moment in American history. This celebration of freedom also presents a wonderful opportunity to honor African American culture and contributions, especially in the culinary realm. This Juneteenth, why not elevate your commemoration with a fusion of African-American-inspired cuisine and wines from outstanding African American vintners?

Pairing One: Fried Chicken & Sparkling Wine from McBride Sisters

Start the celebration with a classic: Southern-style fried chicken. Its flavorful, crispy coating pairs beautifully with the effervescence of the McBride Sisters' Sparkling Brut Rosé. The vibrant acidity and bubbles contrast wonderfully with the rich, savory chicken, making every bite—and sip—an absolute delight.

Pairing Two: Grilled BBQ Ribs & Zinfandel from Brown Estate

Juneteenth isn't complete without some smoky, tangy barbecued ribs fresh off the grill. For this, we recommend a bottle of Brown Estate's Zinfandel. This Napa Valley winery, owned and operated by the Brown family, is known for its opulent Zinfandel, with bold fruit flavors that stand up to the intense, smoky sweetness of the BBQ.

Pairing Three: Black-eyed Pea Salad & Sauvignon Blanc from Theopolis Vineyards

For a lighter pairing, try a refreshing black-eyed pea salad, a staple in African American cuisine. It pairs wonderfully with Theopolis Vineyards' Sauvignon Blanc. The wine's bright citrus notes and crisp acidity enhance the salad's fresh flavors, creating a harmonious balance on the palate.

Pairing Four: Peach Cobbler & Riesling from Maison Noir Wines

No Juneteenth celebration is complete without a nod to the sweet side of Southern cuisine. A warm, comforting peach cobbler can find its match in the Other People’s Pinot Gris (O.P.P.) by Maison Noir Wines, founded by André Hueston Mack. While technically a Pinot Gris, this wine has a touch of sweetness and fruity notes that complement the dessert beautifully.

This Juneteenth, raise a glass to freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward equality. Let's celebrate by supporting African American winemakers and the richness of African American cuisine. Salud to Juneteenth— a day of reflection, rejoicing and looking forward to a future filled with promise.
